Songs of the Month List – November 2016

Below is a list of some of my favourite songs of the month. Not all of these songs were released in the past month, but they are my favourite over the course of November.

Travis Scott – Biebs in the Trap (feat. NAV)

This song, which embodies the dark side of the party scene, features Travis Scott and Canadian artist NAV singing over a bass-filled trap instrumental. This song is catchy and drenched in autotuned hype. Travis’ choppy flow is really different, and NAV’s smoothness are an interesting contrast.

Belly – Frozen Water (feat. Future)

The trap drums in this song are speaker rattling, and both Belly (a Canadian rapper) and Future bring their A-game as they each turn up for a verse. This song has an earworm chorus, and both rappers contribute their individual styles for a great track.

The Weeknd – Starboy (feat. Daft Punk)

This song, with its primal drum pattern and melancholic piano chords, is the perfect dark opening for the Weeknd’s latest album of the same name. Starboy, as the lead single, served to set an overall tone as the Weeknd sings of his life of excess, ultimately blaming the world on making him a “Starboy”. This song is a radio hit, and rightfully so. The chorus is catchy, and the drums are danceable.

Young M.A. – OOOUUU

Regardless of what people say, New York rap is alive and well. This song, with its Bobby-Schmurda-Reminiscent tempo and periodic screams sampled into the beat, is perfect for getting pumped up. The lyrics are memorable, and the song shows lots of potential for Young M.A.
