The 2017 Oscars
The 89th Academy Awards aired on Sunday, February 26th. Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the ceremony celebrated the outstanding films of 2016. The show took place in the Dolby Theatre in Los Angles and is organized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Over the course of the evening, 24 awards were given out to the best in the film industry over the last year.
Spanning from Best Picture, to Costume Design and Film Editing, the Oscars commends both the films of 2016 and those who helped to create them. La La Land garnered the most nominations with 14. The film won awards in Cinematography, Production Design, Music (Original Score), and for “City of Stars”, Music (Original Song). Emma Stone took home the award for Actress in a Leading Role and Damien Chazelle won the Oscar in Directing for their work on the film. Best Picture was won by Moonlight. The Oscar for Actor in a Leading Role was given to Casey Affleck for his role in Manchester by the Sea. Zootopia took home the Oscar for Animated Feature Film. The awards for Actress and Actor in a Supporting Role went to Viola Davis (Fences) and Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) respectively. Performers that took the stage included John Legend, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Auli’i Cravalho, Sting, and Justin Timberlake.
The red carpet was also a highlight of the night. In my opinion, some of the best dressed were Chrissy Teigen in Zuhair Murad and Nicole Kidman in Armani Privé. Charlize Theron and Viola Davis also stunned on the red carpet.
